Optimal Pain Relief for our Veterans

Colorado Injury and Pain Specialists provides a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain and mental health, as we feel that the two often go hand-in-hand. We offer a variety of minimally invasive procedures for neck, back, and joint pain that recorded an average of up to 87% pain relief for the patient, and also, substantially decreases the patient’s use of opioids!

Over the last 10 years, Colorado Injury and Pain Specialists have tracked the clinical outcomes of our growing Veteran patient population in hopes to provide a quality plan of care for those with unique chronic pain and mental health conditions as we are passionate about supporting those who have sacrificed for our country and how we can best give back to those patients.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to interview a patient who suffers from lumbar facet arthritis from her time served in the US military. She states, “the way that the weight from the equipment sat on my body everyday caused my facets (fingers that come off of the vertebrae) to wear more than normal.”

Today, the patient was scheduled for a Rhizotomy procedure in the lumbar spine (L3-S1), also known as an RFA- radio frequency ablation. This was the patients’ second time having the procedure done, the first time being a year ago. (typical an RFA can provide relief for 6-12 months). During this procedure, the patient remains awake, under conscious sedation, just enough to not feel the needles, but for sensory testing to make sure they’re close enough to the nerves. The procedure is performed under fluoroscopy, which is a “live” X-ray, to ensure the needles are in the right spot. An RFA “burns” the nerves, interrupting the pain signals. The patient states, “I might need to repeat this procedure every 12-18 months, but it gives me months to years of relief at a time and that is worth it for me! I highly recommend this to anyone with similar conditions!”
